How does XRF gold testing work?
XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing fires a controlled X-ray beam at your jewellery and measures the energy that bounces back from the metal. Different metals give off different energy patterns, so the analyser can identify what percentage of the item is made up of gold, platinum, palladium and other alloy metals. It is non-destructive, fast, and gives a clear purity reading that helps us value your jewellery fairly before we make an offer.
Is XRF testing better than acid testing for checking jewellery purity?
Traditional acid testing can give a rough indication of purity, but it depends heavily on the operator, only tests a small area and can mark softer items. XRF testing is non-destructive and reads the metal composition in more detail, which means a clearer picture of what the item is actually made of. In practice, XRF is a more modern, consistent and customer-friendly way to assess precious metal content, especially when you are selling gold by post and want a reliable process.
Does Cash4gold-Now test platinum and palladium as well as gold?
Yes, we use XRF analysis to test gold, platinum and palladium jewellery before we calculate your valuation. The analyser looks at the full metal mix in each item, so we can see the precious metal content rather than just relying on a stamped hallmark. This helps make sure items that contain platinum or palladium, as well as gold, are assessed properly before we make you an offer.
How is my final offer calculated?
First, we test your jewellery to check the purity of the gold, platinum and palladium it contains. We then group items by metal type and purity and apply live precious metal prices for that day to work out the intrinsic metal value. From there, we calculate your offer and contact you with a clear figure; if you accept, we send the money straight to your bank, with 1 hour bank transfer once you accept our offer. If you decide not to go ahead, we return your items free of charge using secure, insured post.
How do I start selling my jewellery?
You start by ordering your free gold selling pack so you can send your gold, platinum and palladium jewellery to us securely. You then use the secure, insured Royal Mail service included in your pack to post your items to our valuation team. Once your jewellery arrives, we test and value it, then send you an offer based on purity and live metal prices; if you are happy with the offer, you approve it and we arrange a 1 hour bank transfer once you accept our offer.
